Local employment opportunities soar in social care
It has been predicted that in 2033, 23% of the population will be over 65 years of age compared with 16% in 2008. This will have a major impact on government spending on health care and pensions. More people will claim benefits such as state pensions but there will be fewer people paying income tax and a shortage of skilled workers to provide support to this aging population.
To help alleviate this shortage, The Department of Health is promoting the benefits of working in social care and has invested in television advertising, highlighting career opportunities within job centres.
Personnel & Care Bank is a specialist independent social care recruitment agency. Rosalind Payne, Managing Director explained the impact that the Department of Health promotion has had on local people. “We have seen a definite increase in applications from local people who want to work as home carers. On average an additional 2 applicants apply to us for work as a home care worker because they realise that the flexibility of the job allows them to work around their already busy schedule. Some people simply want to give something back to the community whilst others are viewing this as a fantastic career pathway within the social care field.”

Results of BCC Survey leads to minute taking course for PCB Temps
PCB temps working at BCC recently attended a ‘minute taking’ course after a manager’s survey discovered a skills shortage in minute taking. Managers feedback that few people have the skills required to take meaningful minutes and actions and this was a drawback, particularly during busy meetings.
To rectify this, Arvinder Pathay and her PCB team sourced a ‘Master Minute Taker’ trainer who provided practical mock meeting techniques and taught the temps how to structure the minutes.
10 temps attended the session and one delegate said “the course was extremely helpful and it has given me the confidence that I previously lacked. I can now take minutes both by hand and with a PC and I am looking forward to utilising my new found skills to support my team.”
Arvinder was delighted at the success of the course and said “provided that managers give them the opportunity to hone their new skills in smaller meetings, they will quickly build confidence and their ability to take minutes will become a valuable asset to BCC.”

PCB sponsor Sure Start Managers Lunch
In recognition of their successful 7 year partnership with Sure Start, Personnel & Care Bank (PCB) sponsored a lunch for Managers attending the quarterly forum meeting in the West Midlands. During the meeting managers discussed teams, budgets, IT and recruitment issues affecting their community based children and family services.
PCB provides CRB cleared admin, social care and social work staff to an extensive list of Sure Start centres across the West Midlands. As a result of the partnership, Sure Start has built a comprehensive candidate database of temporary staff, with first-hand experience of working with the children and parents in the local community.
“During the lunch we were able to network with the Managers and we gained valuable face-to-face feedback on their current and future recruitment needs and concerns and how they are being affected by the economic climate.” PCB’s Social Work Consultant Nicky Heath said. “It is definitely a challenge maintaining a large bank of CRB cleared staff with children and family experience, but by keeping close ties with each team we understand what they need from us. This vital two-way communication has helped us forge a strong and longstanding partnership with Sure Start.”

PCB Sponsors Bouncy Castle at Welcome Children’s Centre Launch - Aug 2009
The event is a celebration of the first 17 successful months of team and partnership working at the centre, in Chaplin Road, Wembley, which started offering services to families in March 2008.
Dr Byron unveiled a plaque in the centre and was joined by Brent Council Leader, Cllr Paul Lorber, Mark Easton, Chief Executive at Brent NHS, Cllr Bob Wharton, lead member for Children and Families, and Krutika Pau, Children and Families Assistant Director for Strategies and Partnerships.
Since March 2008 the centre has reached nearly 800 families to deliver a range of services that include play groups; parenting sessions; family learning activities; counselling; and access to advisors on employment and tax matters from Jobcentre Plus and HM Revenue and Customs. Nicole Levy Child Care consultant of PCB’s Wembley team said it was really nice to hear how much difference the centre truly makes to the local community and PCB are very pleased to have been part of the event.
The team has a dietician and a speech and language therapist working with them and there are weekly sing-along and healthy-eating sessions.
The centre also acts as a signpost to other clinics and to services such as immunisation, baby weighing and potty training offered by the health visiting team based there.
Centre Manager Sasi Srinivasan said: "Much of Dr Tanya Byron's work has been with children and families, many of them vulnerable, especially in the areas of parenting, emotional needs and children's safety.
"This is very much in line with what we are trying to achieve at our children's centre. So we are really delighted that she will be with us for the opening and meet our families on the day."
There are 13 Brent children's centres in Alperton, Kingsbury, Neasden, Wembley and Willesden, with more planned openings later this year. 24/07/2009
